Background and Skills
I started working as an editor in 2010 while in a three-year Master of Fine Arts program in creative nonfiction writing at the University of New Orleans. In addition to providing critiques and line edits for my classmates through writing workshops, I served for two years under a mentor as Associate Nonfiction Editor at a literary journal called Bayou Magazine, working with authors whose manuscripts I had selected to revise and edit for publication.
Prior to entering graduate school, I worked as an instructor of advanced English grammar for second language learners, during which time I studied and mastered the linguistic concepts behind the mechanics of formal written English.
Since completing my MFA program, I have worked for several years as a freelance editor and have helped writers with essays, articles, and book projects of all kinds, often taking rough draft material and shaping it into a final product for publication.
I am versed in MLA, Chicago, and APA styles as well as Strunk & White’s Elements of Style. While I am competent at all levels of editing, my particular talent lies in line editing for clarity of ideas, precision of word usage, smooth syntax, and effective sentence structure as well as grammar and punctuation.
